Late Summer 2013 Anime Impressions

Last season I had a bit of an anime crash. You know those times where your interests basically fall elsewhere, and so it becomes pretty hard to keep up with a new anime season…Ya, well luckily I’m slowly recuperating with this season, which is why I decided to only pick up a small handful of shows to watch. There is still a lot I’d like to see so any recommendations or demands for me to watch certain things are quite welcomed!

Dangan Ronpa

This is a very peculiar show to say the least. It’s something that I feel some could easily hate, and I can understand why. I mean the character designs are laughable and the story lacks much depth to actually create all that much of an impact. BUT it’s a hell of a lot of fun! IF you can just blindly ignore all its many flaws, you can be sure to be in for a really fun ride.

Free!

I’m glad the initial criticisms for this show have died down, because after you get over the fact that this is going to be a series with a lot of topless men, you can notice that it’s not all that bad. It’s like any other Kyoani slice of life show, except it actually has some more things happening in it than what we’re used to. Not to mention, there is an attempt to actually add personality to the characters and the plot has direction to. It’s nothing incredible, but it manages to actually deliver exactly what it set out to do.

Gatchaman Crowds

I was surprised to hear this series was getting mixed reviews. I clearly have a foundness for the director and the art, but outside of that, the story is great and the characters make for a unique cast. I’m really hoping to see more interactions between Rui and Hajime, and to maybe having them join forces. I just think Rui needs somebody positive in his life right now!

Shingeki no Kyojin

Based on the fact that this is on its way to becoming one of the most popular titles in anime history, I can only say I like it but don’t particularly love it. Even so, considering the amount of popularity this has been receiving for anime and non-anime fans alike, I think it’s a worthwhile experience to be a part of. It’s a crazy series that really knows how to grab an audience and keep them tuning in week to week. In terms of my personal enjoyment, it just doesn’t click with me the way it seems to with others. I enjoy the twists and turns it brings me on, but I’m not craving for the next episode every week.

Servant x Service

How can a show about working in civil service be so entertaining? It’s really charming and and even though the jokes don’t always work and are at times repetitive, at their worst, they’re still pretty entertaining. This is just one of those I always know I have to check into because you can just sit back, relax, and enjoy. I’m also appreciating the romance aspects to it, which is surprisingly endearing to watch because we have seen similar stories having been made before.

Watamote

Despite the fact that this series ultimately has one punch line (she’s unpopular…we get it), it actually manages to deliver a surprisingly vast amount of material for that one joke. Also, it’s pretty interesting to finally see an interesting light focused on a female lead. I have really been enjoying the series so far, but it would be nice to be able to have our lead have more interactions with some minor characters. It’s mostly just her speaking monologues and although they succeed with that, if they could add a bit more to this series, it could probably help.
