Synopsis (From MAL):

Every 30 years, a new princess is chosen from the Hime family to serve the Hayagami. The time has come again, but over these past years, records state not a single female has been born, save for one, the 15-year-old Arata. The only problem is, Arata is actually a male! Forced to disguise himself and take the place of the princess candidate until a formal one can be found, he attends the festival only to witness the current princess, Kokuri-hime, murdered, and his own life is forfeit as well, by the hands of the princess' personal guard, the 12 Shinshou. As he runs for his life, Kannagi of the 12 convinces everyone that Arata is the one who has murdered the princess instead, and now everyone in the Imperial Court is after his head!

Review:

Three episodes in, this action show about a kid with serious self-image and trust issues who is thrust into another world filled with intrigue and magic holds great promise, if it can avoid getting whiny. So far that is the biggest worry I have about the main character, Arata. He seems to be a bit of a whiner. Not that he doesn't seem to have a reason to be a bit down on the world, based on the bits and pieces we've been shown of his life before swapping bodies with the Arata from the magical world, not to mention the rough time he has had after the change.

Art wise, the show is fairly impressive. The backgrounds in the mundane world are fairly standard, but with good use of color and lighting. The magical world, on the other hand, is vibrant and alive, with imaginative landscapes and impressive magical effects. The animation in the mundane world was a bit less impressive, but it was still solidly done. The character designs are also good, though I'm never a huge fan of the perma-chibi characters like the grandmother, she does provide a good amount of comic relief. The other character designs are all quite attractive, though it is a bit heavy on the male characters. I realize that the manga this is adapted from is published in the Shounen Sunday magazine, but  with the bishounen designs and the general male heavy cast, it almost seems more like a shojo title. (Though I would expect it to be a reverse harem if it were one, and the main character isn't a girl. I suppose it could still turn out to be shounen-ai…)

The story, three episodes in, is quite strong, though also quite standard. Boy gets transported to a fantasy world where he discovers he has magical powers and is some sort of “hero they've been waiting for.” (Though, technically, it is boy from a fantasy world switches places with boy from the real world and the real world boy finds he has powers…) The twist here is that the main character has about as much self esteem as a turnip and some serious trust issues. It appears that his personal problems are the driving force that will make him strive to make sure that he doesn't let down the people who are placing their trust in him, regardless of how foolish he thinks people are for trusting other people at all.

Episode Highlights:

The first episode starts out with a fairly lengthy section with the “real world” Arata, demonstrating how much he hates his life. It doesn't give any major back-story about why the people who appear to want to bully and isolate him at school act the way that they do, but by the time we get to the end of this part of the episode, his only friend has betrayed him, though it looked less like real betrayal to me and more like “these guys are gonna beat me up if I don't say what they want to hear”.

The action then shifts to the fantasy world, where the fantasy world Arata is having a pretty bad day himself. It seems that their society is held together by the magical power of the Princess that rules the land. The Princess can only come from the Hime clan, who have the special magical power that holds the gods, which are embodied in swords called Hayagami, in check. Once every thirty years, a new woman from the Hime clan is supposed to take over for the previous Princess. The problem is that there have been no females born to the Hime clan for over 60 years now. The current Princess has been serving all that time. Arata's grandmother, for some reason, lied about a daughter being born, leading everyone to believe that the transition will be taking place soon. Unfortunately, Arata is not a girl. Her idea is to have him pretend to be a girl while a last ditch effort to find some shirttail relative that can take the job of Princess is carried out.

Arata goes to the the ceremony in drag, accompanied by Kotoha, a childhood friend who is of the Uneme clan, who are healers that serve the Hime clan. She gives him a stone amulet which she was given by the Princess, for luck I presume. At the Ceremony, Arata finds out that the twelve Shinsho warriors, who wield the Hayagami, have a plot to betray the old Princess and the new one, claiming control of the world. One of the twelve tries to kill the Princess, but she uses her powers to basically put herself into stasis. Discovering that Arata is a man, they have a convenient scapegoat to pin the attempted murder of the Princess on. Arata escapes from them and runs into the Kando Forest, which is magical and is known to “eat” peoples memories.

In the real world, the other Arata is busy feeling down and deciding to never trust anyone again. The other Arata runs into the magical forest, then all of a sudden, the two of them are floating in mid-air, followed by a magical body swap.

Now in this strange fantasy world, Arata appears to be a bit over his head. He cowers to hide from the people firing arrows at him, then there is a brief shot of the old rusty sword that the grandmother had, and he is teleported away from the danger, and into the arms of Kotoha.

She leads him to Arata's grandmother's house, where the old lady seems to be the only one that gets the concept that this Arata is not the Arata that left her house in a dress earlier. Soon enough, the Shinsho that attacked the Princess finds them, and threatens the women if Arata doesn't give himself up. He decides to put up a fight and grabs the old rusty sword to defend himself. One thing leads to another and, with grandma's help, he activates the hidden power of the sword. It is a Hayagami, and because he can activate it, it means that Arata has been selected as a Sho.

Episode 2:

Starting where the first episode left us, we find out that Granny's old rusty sword is actually a Hayagami, just like the 12 Shinsho wield, making Arata a Sho. The Hayagami are the gods of this world, which, if memory serves, the Princess has to keep in check with her powers. Kannagi, the Sho who attacked the Princess and is trying to kill Arata, is shocked that Arata's Hayagami basically cancels out his. After Kannagi retreats, the house collapses, and, I presume, Granny used magic to port them away to some other location, Arata learns about the whole Hayagami thing. Kotoha still seems confused, thinking that cooking Arata's favorite foods will help him regain his “lost memories” and not understanding where the necklace, which was a present from the Princess to her and she gave Arata before he went to the ceremony, went.

Back in the mundane world, it seems that Arata's mom and sister, while wondering why Arata isn't answering his phone, find him sitting in the middle of town with no shirt on. It is clear that they see “their” Arata, just like everyone on the other world see the one they expect.

Back in Fantasy world, Kannagi has tracked down Arata, threatens to kill Granny if he won't come peacefully, and Arata doesn't have his Hayagami to fight him with anyway, so Arata is captured and taken to face trial. The 12 Shinsho have decided to do a trial for show, and to impress the people with their authority, as opposed to just killing him outright.

On the way to his trial, the necklace starts glowing and a portal to the other world appears. Arata sees the other Arata in his room. They come to an understanding of sorts about their situation and the fantasy Arata tells our hero that it was Kannagi who tried to kill the Princess while the rest of the 12 just stood and watched. Their betrayal strikes a chord with Arata.

At the trial, the 12 Shinsho accuse Arata of attempting to murder the Princess. When he tells the truth about how the 12 Shinsho betrayed the Princess and that it was Kannagi who tried to kill her, the crowd just take it as a desperate plea of a guilty man. However, since he wants to learn the secret of Arata's Hayagami, so his sentence is not death, but an island prison that seems to be something along the lines of “death on the installment plan.”

On his way to his new prison island home, the guards bring in Kotoha, who stowed away so she could go with him. The guards have no problem with condemning her to Arata's fate. However, she managed to sneak in his school bag, with the Hayagami in it. (One wonders how exactly she carried it under her dress without them figuring it out… hmmmm… Impressive thigh muscles?)

He tries to activate the sword to escape, but nothing happens. The necklace lights up and he hears the voice of the Princess calling his name and then they are apparently suspended in mid air and lights converge, turning into an image of the Princess. She calls Arata her new Shinsho and asks him to hear her request. Cue the ED!

Episode 3:

Starting where the previous episode ended, the Princess tells Arata that his speech about the betrayal of the 12 Shinsho made her very happy and it confirmed for her that Arata's heart would “open the path.” She explains that she has used the Amatsuriki, the magic of the Hime clan, “to keep the Hayagami together as one and control their Kamui.” (Kamui is the power of the god in the Hayagami, I guess.) However, with her out of the way, the Hayagami have been freed. It seems that, if the Sho start wielding the power of the swords freely, it will distort the justice of the world and cause the people to suffer. She says that she doesn't know how long she will be able to survive and she wants Arata to lead Amawakuni (their country? their world? I don't know. I think its the first time the name was mentioned…) She also requests that he bring her his Hayagami before her life ends. When he says he can't because he has no power she tells him that she can only trust him. (There seems to be a theme here…)

With that, they are back in their flying ship. Arata is grousing about whether he has what it takes to lead a nation. Kotoha tells him he can, obviously, since the Princess trusts him and she does too. But she suggests that he put away his Hayagami for safe keeping. Where should he keep it? She shows him:

Evidently, Sho are able to store their Hayagami inside their body, which only freaks Arata out a little bit…

They reach their pleasant little island prison and the welcoming committee is a bit underwhelming. While most of the prisoners are muttering about him being “the Princess Killer”, one young kid and his even younger, and quite annoying, sidekick go on the offensive. They are a bit taken aback by the fact that he has a “hot chick” with him, but decide that taking off his head is the best course of action.

Their plans are interrupted by “The Reckoning”, when the warden of the prison randomly selects two people to be devoured by some big tube things. An opportunistic woman tells them how things work, in exchange for one of Kotoha's hair pins.

We find out that the rest of the Shinsho have no idea why Kannagi chose to send Arata to the prison island instead of killing him, but he seems to be the guy in charge, so they'll wait to find out what his plan is when he reveals it. Afterward, Kotoha finds a nice hot spring like bath for Arata, but doesn't join him in the water, though she does offer to wash his back for him, much to his embarrassment. When he winces in pain about the cut he got in the fight earlier, she heals him. She explains that the women of the Uneme clan have healing powers so they can protect their Hime clan masters and that her powers can heal more than just wounds.

While getting dressed, he realized he needs to thank Kotoha for all her help, but before he can get it out, another Reckoning comes and she falls into a hole that opens up in the floor. Arata tries to find her, but is attacked by a bunch of thugs thinking they can get off the island by separating his head from his body. While he sulks about his general uselessness, a strange figure asks him why he, a Sho chosen by a Hayagami, is weeping. When he tells him it is because he couldn't protect Kotoha when she trusted him. The figure asks if he will betray the people he trusts and then disappears.

After that, the a woman who told them about the reckoning shows up and tells him that Kanate took a her someplace. Kanate is the boy that attacked him earlier. She gives him the info for free, musing about how painful it is to be separated from someone precious to you. Meanwhile, Kotoha is chatting with Kanate and Ginchi, the annoying sidekick character, and thanking them for saving her. Ginchi goes to “get some food” as an excuse to give his “big bro” some alone time with the hot chick, but Kanate has no idea how to deal with that, so he goes to check on Ginchi to get away. What he finds is Arata kneeling over Ginchi's body and makes the assumption that Arata had attacked him. Using an “attack first ask questions never” approach, he goes after Arata, who draws his Hayagami to defend himself.

After some manly attacking and stuff, Ginchi wakes up and tells Kanate that he has it all wrong. Then the guy that actually hurt Ginchi comes around the corner and attacks. Arata dispatches him pretty easily.

It turns out that Arata had saved Ginchi when he was attacked by some thugs that were holding a grudge against him for some reason. They took Ginchi's ring, which Kanate runs off to get back from them. Kotoha heals the boy and he tells them their back story: He was kidnapped by a gang of theives when he was “a kid” and that is where he met Kanata, who he calls “Bro”. The gang got into trouble and he and Kanata were framed for it and ended up on the island prison. The ring was something his

Loli senseis just reeks of moe! KYAAAAAAAAA~

Yes, I couldn't watch Aiura last week – I was having a very leisurely time lollygagging in Tokyo, and despite my initial plans to catch Aiura at 1:35am in the morning – I realised to my absolute horror that my hostel had no TV  : /

Episode #3 and #4 fully introduces the senseis of the Trio – 1st off we have the Homeroom Sensei!

A sensei who apparently writes her own name wrongly in the 1st lesson….

but should be forgiven because she has a hot ass. *Applause!* (=_=)

Kanaka decides to give a totally fresh response during the pop quiz. very serious class rep is astounded.  How Kanaka decided to name her sensei “Jinguji Hikaru” is bryond me though – don't know if it's a pun , or Kanakana simply being herself.

Ah yes, then we have Matsune Sensei that teaches math…

who seems to be in a very illicit relationship with a very cute student….*engrossed*

EHHH?!  (O.O)

Apart from the teachers, comedic shorts by the main trio Saki, Ayuko and Kanaka that adds on to the hilarity. The manzai relationship of Kanaka and Saki really livens the show up.

Because having a Boke pressing the doorbell repeatedly never gets old. hahah!

I'm really looking forward to looking at the teacher – student interactions since pretty much the main cast has been introduced – with both the teachers and the main trio being characters with rather interesting and unique characteristics. This show is definitely going the right way as a comedic slice of life – it makes little bits of life rather humourous.

and because Ayukong is seriously cute, even when she cries or frown. :)

Today we have another Kagerou Project song by Jin. This should've been out last week but I was having exams so here it is. My apologies to anyone following these posts.

So here we have another amazing song by Jin. This song is the latest in the Kagerou Project series of songs and its about how the Mekakushi Dan was formed. Main character in this song is Ayano Tateyama (which you can probably figure out from the title), who also made an appearance in a few other songs. She is member No. 0 and the original founder of the Mekakushi Dan.

The song itself is a very touching ballad which will seriously tug at your heartstrings. The melody is really simple as well as the instruments and it really emphasizes the vocals in this song. Hence, for utaites with really amazing vocals, this song is just godly. For this original version, IA is pretty much tuned to Jin's standard. Sadly, this is a ballad and IA's electronic voice may sound a bit awkward since its emphasized so much. As such, I'll be recommending the more notable covers below.

un:c's high pitched singing doesn't sit well with me sometimes but for this song it's just perfect.

For Yuuto's version, well, nothing really special about it other than Yuuto's “Ikemen” voice. Which is pretty damn good, if I happen to allude otherwise.

Here we have my favorite male cover by Aho no Sakata. This is a acoustic and piano only arrangement and god its works so well with Sakata's voice, especially the whispery sections.

Lastly, my personal favorite, is sung by *nano. Some people may say this cover sounds “unpolished” or even “amateurish” but for me, I doubt that any other covers can beat this version. 3:17, seriously, just listen to it.

Enjoy!

Episode Review: Majestic Prince Episodes 2-4

$
0
0

Episodes 2 through 4 of Majestic prince give us a bit more action, a bit more back story, a bit more character development, and a lot more poor character designs. They also introduce a new character, a white haired beauty named Theoria who may be more than she appears.

Impressions and Highlights:

While the character designs still bug me, these episodes did a lot toward my enjoyment of the show. For one, they explained, reasonably, why our little five man band was able to accomplish what they did in the first episode. But more than that, the show displayed a sufficient level of vulnerability so these young pilots don't seem like unbeatable heroes.

One of the key areas where that vulnerability was shown was on the home front. The kids were entirely unable to handle the attention they received as a result of their heroism. In the “press conference” they were comical, almost painfully so, in their awkwardness. It also introduces the fact that Asagi is having so much trouble dealing with the stress that his stomach is bothering him.

The clever use of social media in the show impressed me. I like the way Suruga was watching the feed of their press conference during the press conference. Reading the scrolling comments kind of gave him a real time look at how idiotic they seemed!

The scene after the press conference, however, was one of the best moments in the show so far. A group of the civilians that Team Rabbits saved when they pushed back the aliens and prevented them from taking the base that the brass had written off as a loss comes to thank them. Not only is it sweet and heart warming, it demonstrates that the animators are perfectly capable of making attractive characters, as the little girl who gives a thank you card to Tamaki is about the cutest thing in the show! The reactions of the kids as they deal with a sincere outpouring of emotion from people whose lives were saved by their actions is really well done.

Another “back to reality” moment, came when Team Rabbits was sent out to do a relatively simple job of deploying communications satellites that were destroyed in the battle. But to complicate things, they are outfitted in sponsor decals like race cars and the entire thing is being covered live by the news media. Of course, things go wrong. A group of of aliens, flying previously unseen attack craft, disrupt their assignment. When the combat unit for Asagi is deployed, he misses the rendezvous, a video of which goes viral. And, for the most part, they are unable to deal with the enemy.

After this very public failure, the team has routine physicals and the doctor suggests some R&R is in order for the young pilots. She also hints that there may be something seriously wrong with one of the characters, but so far nothing more has been said about it. The trip to a resort is a handy excuse for a swimsuit episode, though the suits the girls wear are not the most attractive in the world (see the first picture above.)

The resort trip provides plenty of opportunity for some character development, with some indications that Kei may be harboring feelings for Izuru, more failed romantic pining from Tamaki, and the introduction of another character, Theoria, who may or may not be human. (There is a section of one of the episodes that indicated to me that she may be one of the aliens.)

Interestingly, Izuru's first meeting with Theoria results in his being tossed into the zero-G swimming pool by her bodyguard/butler guy, when Izuru sees her arguing with him and for some unknown reason, even to him, tries to intervene. When asked about it by his friends (after they rescue him from the pool, as it turns out that he can't swim) he says he has never met her, but he feels like he knows her somehow. This discussion touches on the fact that these kids don't have actual parents and that their memories the foster families they were placed with and all of their personal memories prior to entering the military school they attend were erased.

The concept of the origin of these young pilots is also covered quite well in these episodes. They are genetically designed individuals, created as part of a program with the intent of helping the human race adapt to life in space. However, it is clear that some of the people in the military view them as “custom designed soldiers”. The rational for their enhanced fighting capabilities is the “Juria” system. Their mecha units have been, somehow, imbued with the pilot's DNA, giving the machine itself a sort of survival instinct. This means that the machine sometimes “wants” to choose the “flight” aspect of the “Fight of Flight” instinct. However, when the pilot pushes past this and the machine goes into action, the combat power is enhanced by the system, giving the pilot a distinct advantage.

Team Rabbits were chosen to work together specifically because they have the strongest survival instincts of the candidates in their school. The problem with them is that none of them ever scored well in the “teamwork” portions of their training. If this band of misfits can be taught to actually work as a team, they will be truly impressive, or so the theory goes. Their hot instructor with a sweet tooth, we find out in Episode 4, is a childhood friend of the huge breasted, sake drinking chief mechanic and was also the only pilot to return alive from one of the early attacks by the aliens. She was not entirely pleased to have been assigned to teach, but the commander impressed upon her that her piloting days were over and passing on her strong survival skills to a new generation of pilots was imperative!

The action highlight of the episodes comes from another failed mission. This time, the failure is due mostly to incompetent leadership, as they are sent out on a mission with some high muckety muck in the military, who either was given bad intelligence info, or badly misinterpreted the info he was given, about a supposed supply convoy that they are sent to ambush. It turns out that it is not supply convoy, but instead a group of forward scouts with very high military capability. Episode 3 ends with Tamaki's “Rose 3″ taking a bad hit, with the potential of her not making it back.

After the interesting choice of placing the back-story for their teacher in the middle of a battle, the story concludes this misadventure in a pretty impressive fashion. In the battle, we see much of what we have learned about the “Juria” system in action. The units all seem to shut down when their cowardly and abrasive commander makes an ill advised comment about the huge cost of these pilots while refusing to order them to retreat in the face of a far superior force. However, when Izuru concocts and carries out a plan to save Tamaki, we see the other side of the coin at work. All in all, it is a great battle sequence, with some indication that the group is learning to fight as a team.

All in all, the show is fun to watch. The space battles are fantastic and well planned, there is a bit of mystery to what little plot there is, with the new character spicing things up quite a bit. However, much of the dialog is beyond cheesy and groan-worthy, and the majority of the characters are paper thin and one dimensional. If they can actually pull off some character growth and plot development in the next few episodes, it will make the show really worthwhile, instead of just a fun, predictable place to see really good CGI space battles.

Took the Kosei line from JR Kyoto station to JR Otsukyo station which is just the 2 stations away.

JR Kyoto station -> Yamashina station -> Otsukyo station.

There were some delays. Probably because of the earthquake earlier that day.

JR Otsukyo station

Shot with my phone and uploaded to twitter, so low resolution.

Why Omi Jingu? See Chihayafuru.

It seemed like a long walk from the station to Omi Jingu, But it was straight down a street, no turns (after crossing from the station and taking an underpass and then turning right).

I depended on offline maps on my android phone + gps as I could not find the landmark that I had noted (Post office). The gps took a while to locate my position though, by that time I've already found the post office.

Along the way you'll see markers marking sites of the former palace in Otsu.

Omi Jingu's Torii

On the left, Omi Jingu

On the right, Lake Biwa

There're maps marking places of interests and trails in Otsukyo/Otsu available at the train station.

You should be able to find the above shot cropped in the OP of Chihayafuru S2.

There were very little people around that day.

Time pieces

There's a clock/timepieces museum in Omi Jingu, but it was already closing time by the time I reached.

Yea, Chihayafuru.

Today's trip is to Toji, just a few minutes (not more than 30mins) walk away from Kyoto station. So we decided to travel on foot.

Toji dates back to the Heian period.

The pagoda of Tō-ji stands 54.8 m high, and is the tallest wooden tower in Japan –wikipedia

After that its lunch at Yoshinoya, and the Kamogawa walk.

We walked all the way from Toji to Sanjo along the river. There were some bridges on the way and the busiest ones were Shijo and Sanjo bridges. The riverside from Gojo to Sanjo were lined with people too. I guess its because its a Sunday.

Kyoto Tower seen from between 2 buildings

On the way back along the river. It was about time for the sun to set.

It was a nice scene. Some locals stopped to take photos too.

The only form of transport today was by foot. About 6km+ of walking done.

Got dinner from Lawson. Convenience stores here are really convenient.

Well, this was the weirdest week in my memory!! I took part in my clubs kendo competition over the weekend and a few other surprise events have left me reeling! So there's not much to update on pretty much anything right now, other than my copy of persona 4 Arena FINALLY arrived!! I had planned to not buy it and cancelled my pre-order at Amazon. Except it seemed that I had also put a pre-order in at shopto as well, and that was not cancelled. Oh well… First impressions are that it's a very good fighting game, just not worth the wait!

Also, I believe that my mecha anime video is now complete and currently sits at just under 3GB large! So the only way I can think of distributing it is via torrent so if anyone has any ideas on a good free tracker to use, let me know. I tried using openbttracker but I just can't get any seed (i.e. myself) to connect to my second system to start the transfer…

Episode Highlights: Hataraku Maou-sama! #06

魔王, 学校の階段を昇る | The Overlord Climbs the Stairs at School

From the previews last week, I was expecting Maou-san to be enrolled into Chiho's school. Glad that didn't happen. That'd be a disaster for his fast food career.

Maou-san continues his search for an alternative source of power to replenish his demonic powers. For obvious reasons, he can't use the negative emotions of people this time. Lucifer, who as of now lives as a shut-in in Maou-san's house, offers up some intel regarding to the location of said source of power. Turns out, the source of power he was referring to is an abandoned classroom. At one point in time, the Gate may have been used there. With Chiho as the guide, (her school after all) Maou-san and Ashiya decides to investigate it.

As per usual Emilia the Stalker butts in on the fun. She can be annoying and she certainly is here but to me she doesn't really impact the group dynamics between the characters that much. Just a minor gripe. Nevertheless, the fivesome discovers the whereabouts of the “forbidden classroom”. Ashiya points out that the classroom isn't as abandoned as the rumors say. The various leftovers of potato chips and a handheld console further solidifies his theory. Lucifer calls at this point to ask of Maou-san to bring back the handheld console.

So… Maou-san's quest to replenish his powers turned into a fetch quest for Lucifer handheld console. How anti-climatic. That said, Hataraku Maou-sama leaves us with a cliffhanger regarding a mysterious girl in a yukata on the doorstep of Maou-san's home.

Let's Duel!

Nice to have a breather episode after the plot-heavier than usual one we had previously. Hataraku Maou-sama continues to deliver some really great comedic gags but the one thing that stood out for me this week was the one involving Miki-T's picture in a bikini D: . Why would she do that? Here I was expecting some explanations to her existence in the show. Though I'm glad the audience wasn't shown the full picture. The same can't be said for Maou-san as he was assaulted by the imagery just as the episode was about to end. Poor guy.

As some people had pointed out, Lucifer did become a shut-in. More of a necessity to evade the police rather than against his own volition. Although, I have a feeling that he was already one before he met Maou-san in this world, when he spent his time in the Human World with Orba.

I'd like to note that Maou-san definitely had acted quite indifferently against Chiho's affection for him. Either it is due to his demonic nature of not understand human interactions or the usual romantic comedy misunderstandings, I do feel bad for Chiho. All I can say is do your best Chiho-san!!!

Maou-san kidnaps a girl? What next?

Series Checkpoint: Date A Live

デート・ア・ライブ | DATE A LIVE

We have finally reached the midway point for this series. Being a one cour series, there's only about six episodes left till the finale. So let us take this opportunity to reflect on what DATE A LIVE had given us thus far.

The first episode didn't leave much of an impression on me. Sure it had a great introduction to the resident imouto, Kotori but there wasn't much that piqued my interest. Despite that, I was curious to see what DATE A LIVE had in store for me. The episodes that followed were by far better than the somewhat weaker first episode. It's like with Infinite Stratos. Though the plot was kinda lulz, the unique characters and the fun character interactions between the cast were the highlight of every episode. Still it was the first episode and I probably shouldn't bash it too much. More of a concern to those people who might have been turned off by it and dropped the show before the show had time to kick into full gear.

What would YOU do if you had a sister like Kotori?

The plot revolves around a strange phenomenon called “Spacequakes”, a destructive force created due to the presence of Spirits. Their presence causes the immediate vicinity that they appear in to be destroyed. Most of these “Spacequakes” now occur around Japan. Itsuka Shidou, the main character, was caught during one of these “Spacequakes” when he tried to find his sister, Kotori. During the commotion, he witnessed the Anti-Spirits Team battling against one of the Spirits code name “Princess”.

I liked the premise of the show. There's a potential conflict in befriending (dating >_>) these Spirits as they probably caused a lot of lives to be lost when humanity was still unaware of their dangers. They didn't flesh that out so far. We only got a brief mention that Origami's parent were killed during when one of the “Spacequakes” happened. For such a depressing plot point, most of the show is pretty lighthearted.

TOHKA! TOHKA! TOHKA!

Let's talk about the characters. Starting with Yatogami Tohka. She initially gives off a kuudere vibe but after the confession scene at the ruined school building not so much. She's is actually quite childish, constantly asking for treats and usually gets jealous whenever Shidou shifts his attention to other girls. She craves attention and is always seeking praises from Shidou. The type of girl that “needs to be protected”. Of course we know that she is quite capable of handling her own in battle with her Sandalphon in hand.

Bunny in the rain

Next we have Yoshino! Initially quite shy. Whenever she gets distressed she loses control of her powers and may unleash a “bunny” Angel. To relieve her anxiety and calm herself, she has Yoshinon as her partner. It acts as an outlet for her as Yoshinon spouts various remarks and insults in a straightforward manner. I think it may be a way for Yoshino to express herself. To be more proactive without her breaking away from her shy nature. There is always a possibility that Yoshinon might be “A LIVE”. Who knows o.O?

Time for some “service”

Next in line is Tobiichi Origami. Unlike the other two, she's a human not a Spirit. Part of the Anti-Spirits Team, she fights Spirits to avenge her deceased parents. Normally quiet and reserved, she displays high level analytical skills on the battlefield. However, she may lose control over her emotions and may fly into a fit of rage during battle. Obviously has some feelings for Shidou and sees Tohka as her main rival. At this point, I'm not sure whether she knows that Tohka is a Spirit or is oblivious to the fact. She gets bonus points for the maid costume and the obligatory shower scene :D

Last but not least is Kotori. A definite bro-con but acts tsun towards Shidou most of the time. Commander of Fraxinus, she spearheads the operation to get Shidou to stop Spirits from wrecking havok. At this point, I really doubt she really is his sister though. The opening sequence is a good spoiler to find out her true identity.

I find the show to be enjoyable. The animation so far is quite decent. No noticeable hiccups from me. The way the characterization was handled and the interactions between the cast, especially between Tohka and Shidou, appeals to me. The side characters could use more screen time though. The fanservice present here and there were pretty decent too. Looking forward to Tokisaki Kurumi's appearance. Probably the last member of Shidou's harem for the anime adaptation.

Hope the second half lives up to the foundation built by the first half. Stay tuned!

Kissu >.<

Who could've seen this coming?

So many incredible things happened this episode…

My thoughts:

  • It's good that Youto is starting to spare more of a thought for Tsukiko, as seen by his realization that he might be forcing Tsukiko to do things she doesn't like while being unaware of it because she is unable to show her emotions. (But really, the one who should be screaming when he accidentally barged in on her changing is her, not him…)
  • It seems that Tsukiko has made a pretty obvious confession to Youto! Whether he's oblivious to what she really means or is actually deceiving himself/refusing to think of her confession as such is not made apparent though.
  • On another note, it seems that Azusa has indeed fallen in love with Youto! She refers to Tsukiko as a “rival”, and even has a pained expression when Youto says “Tsutsukakushi is more important to me than anyone”. It's actually kinda saddening to see her swallowing her disappointment.

  • I can't believe that Youto asked the stony cat to take something away from him again without any hesitation! How on earth is he going to get it back with what happens later (i.e. the stony cat losing its powers)?
  • The stony cat's evil laughter when it shrunk back to before was kinda creepy. Does this mean that the cat was possessed by magical spirits that gave it the ability to grant wishes, or was the laughter, expressions and size of the stony cat a result of obtaining Tsukiko's ability to express emotions?
  • In the end, it seems that it has been left ambiguous as to whether the meat bun really did contain Tsukiko's emotions too. I don't see Tsukushi showing her emotions any more obviously than she did previously.

  • I wonder how Tsukiko felt after the whole incident. For some reason, she seems to have turned cold towards Youto. She even said “sayonara” to him, which is actually only used when people expect not to see each other for a very long time (people would actually normally just use something like “ja ne” in such a situation).
  • And if this episode didn't have enough craziness, Youto's house disappears at the end as well! What on earth does this mean?

I swear, these two really look like a great couple.

Okay, I'm disappointed. There is no Wakatsuki-sensei this week.  Kanaka was very funny, but still…. (T_T)

This episode goes on with an extended small talk between the trio on how Kanaka apparently “died”.  Overall, jokes were decently ridiculous ( this episode might not feel very funny to some.), and on hindsight really showed that ridiculous bits of things we all do in school, like coming up with a ridiculous story and having your friends add on to them as part of the conversation.

Basically Kanaka took the show in this one, since she practically started and continued the bulk of her fantasy story in this episode. She reminds me immensely of Miu from Ichigo Mashimaro in a way with her hair, weird personality and the queer things going on in her head.

Sigh. I wonder when my lovely Ayuko will lead a show.   :3

Kanaka tries to hide her love for pavements by playing dead. Saki apparently doesn't  want to care a dime about Kanaka's weird fetishes.

Saki teaches the audience what to do if Ayuko faints on the streets.

Kanakana becomes Sakura and Shoryukens an assassin. Oooh…

But is Murdered by Ayuko?! Intense Higurashi action.

What she said was pretty meh. But the wink, me likey.

*stares intently at Ayuko's hair and boobs*

Today's featured song is another ballad by HoneyWorks.

HoneyWorks is a group of 3 producers known for their extremely sweet and touching songs. Here, “sweet” would refer to the fuwafuwa kind and not the diabetes kind so take note of that. Their most notable song is Suki, Kirai which is pretty popular too among utaites.
A few clarifications on the song, this is the rearranged version of the original song which you can watch here. Also, this song is part of a series about 3 couples falling in love with each other. However, unlike the other songs in the series, HoneyWorks did not create an “another story” version of it. Still, someone made an “another story” version of it with his own lyrics.

Now, about the song itself, this is a much quieter and more serene version of the original song. This version only has a piano and a violin as its instrumentals which makes the song feel more like a ballad now. Plus, the piano part is played by the godly Marasy himself. The lyrics themselves tell a rather bittersweet story about first love. You can read the lyrics in English here.

As I've said before, ballads are best sung by human voices, so here's another section of my recommended covers for this song (and the other versions too).

This is one of my favorite covers by 96neko and halyosy. 96neko is singing the original lyrics and halyosy is singing the “another story” lyrics. While my inner 96neko fanboy may be shouting that this is the best cover, the two different lyrics in this song can sound really awkward at times. The chorus is really nice though.

Next up is Amatsuki's version. This is the “another story” version and I'll admit, he's in this list mainly because I like his voice.

This one is by Nobunaga, a Korean utaite. I think she has some strange pronunciation at some parts but this is still a very nice cover thanks to her sweet voice.

This “another story” cover is sung by un:c. This is basically a more “high tension” version of the song, which is a refreshing take on the song.

Next, we have a really amazing cover by Aho no Sakata. He's using his usual whispery voice here (usual for his serious covers that is). This is the rearranged version but he uses completely different lyrics which someone else wrote.

Lastly, a cover by Bananacchi. This may just be my favorite female cover for this song. She has a really sweet and clear voice in this cover. Hopefully one day her covers can make the rankings since she's pretty unknown at this point.

Enjoy!

scene A Note on My Absence in Blogging

Dear Readers,

Don’t worry, this isn’t a post to say I’ve decided to quite blogging, in fact this post is here to say the exact opposite. I want to revive Anime Princess. So why has my blog dramatically slowed down in the past few months? Well, I was writing elsewhere because the opportunity came, but it has now fallen through. There is more than one reason as to why, but mostly it's because I came to a point where I just wasn’t enjoying my writing.

Lately, I feel lost about life. Nothing feels right and I'm not really sure how to fix things. I’m in a rut you could say, and my writing was reflecting that. Not to mention, I’m not one to follow schedules, and due to not being able to find much time in my life for anything, I had to dedicate all my time writing for another site over this one. I’m still happy for the time I dedicated over there, but I feel for this summer I need a break from at least a few stressful things in my life. I need to figure out how to manage my life and find joy in the things I once did. Blogging was never supposed to feel like a chore. I want to write things when the inspiration strikes and be able to create content that really reflects the emotions I need to have written out on a page. My writing is something very personal, and I know it’s nothing fancy, but it’s the only way I know how to express myself and I wouldn’t want to change that.

I just needed to get this out there, and I apologize for the rather cryptic rant. All this is to say that I want to try to go back to the days where my life wasn’t one giant stress. Where I could watch something without trying to think of what I need to say about it or dreading each week where I had to come up with new content. I want to go back to the aniblogosphere, read more blogs, and socialize more on twitter. If a new opportunity knocks on my door, I won’t hesitate, but in the meantime I just want to sit back and try to return to those good old days.

Thank you for listening, I hope to talk to you all much more in the coming weeks!

I want to become like my mom.
But when she heard me say that,
for some reason, made a worried face…

Project: Dead Master

Time to get back into the throes of painting more garage kits! Recently acquired another to the “to do” pile in the shape of the Charagumin Shinguji Sakura from Volks so I can't let the pile get any bigger!

I asked some groups online as to which kit I should build next out of the Try-GK Yoko and Dead Master and it was actually a tie. But in the end, I chose DM because I have a stupidly large number of kits which are predominantly black and doing them in a row will be trying so I'm going to try and space things out. Off the top of my head, the black colour scheme characters are Laila, Akane, Bayonetta and Fate (True sonic form). Definitely going to need more black paint for all of them. Heck, Bayonetta is 1/4 scale!! But for now, it's all Dead Master

I wrote a better preview post on dead master a while back (back in 2010) when I first got her so it may be better to have a look there for more complete pics and whatnot. but things haven't changed since then. It just took me this long to get to her (and I still have the World is Mine Miku to do as well, and she's even older!).

I still don't like BRS or any of the characters involved but the high quality of kiking kits and the sheer rarity of the kit pushed me into buying her, despite the massive hurdles it presented. In any case, this will be the first kiking kit I will be making (of 2) and she should be a lof of fun! I mean, look at the sheer detail of her scythe!!

Just hope I can do the kit justice. One thing which bugs me though… why does the body piece of this kit have a huge hole in it?

Any suggestions?
